| OVERVIEW BASEBALL |
|
|
|
Forest Grove Little League endorses the
National Little League philosophy and guidelines. |
|
|
|
FIELD PREPARATION |
|
|
|
Home Team - owns preparing the field. That
includes lining and general field repair. The tools are in the shed
between the AA and AAA fields. You all should have a key. You should
find rakes, shovels, lime, absorbent. and the liners.
Game time is 6pm sharp. In game rain delays
- cancellation is up to Ed Cummings and the umpires. |

|
|
GAME DURATION |
|
|
No inning is supposed to start after an hour
and a half of play. When daylight savings kicks in and it is a nice
night .... And both coaches are in agreement and the parents are not
looking at their watches too much. I say go for it play as long as
its safe.
Warm up pitches. Lets keep the game going. 5-7 pitches should be
plenty. The more methodical pitcher may only get three.
At Bat- In this order: 3 outs. Bat the lineup or the 5 run
limit, whichever comes first. We have gone unlimited last
inning in the past. However this will require judgment as to current
score, available light, etc... |
| |
|
SAFETY |
| |
Players to wear Batting Helmets. The kids must
remain in the dugout, unless warming up to pitch, or need a restroom
break . Judgment to be used here as to where they can warm up. As we
saw last year the school yard gets packed. Warm up catchers must be
in gear.
The on deck circle. There is none. Players to keep in the
dugout and be ready to hit.
Flying Bats. Dropping the bat after the hit as opposed to
flinging the bat for the safety of all involved, catchers, umpires,
coaches etc.
Hit By the Pitch. At this level its inevitable. Spend sometime
coaching how to avoid the pitched ball. Warm up catchers in gear.
Chest and Helmet.
No Head first slides - Will be called out. |

|
RULE INTERPRETATIONS |
| |
The Infield Fly Rule will not be called. The
rule book states that the rule applies to 'easily' catchable fly
balls. At this level no fly ball is easily catchable. Thus any fly
ball will be treated the same whether it is in the infield or
outfield. Again this is rare, but so we are all on the same page.
The Dropped Third Strike. Dropped or caught a strike is a strike is
a strike .
Leading off the base. No leads until the ball passes thru the strike
zone. It also gives your catcher an unobstructed view as the kid on
1st boldly steals 2nd.
The baseline is from home to 1st. Try to get your kids to run down the
line in foul territory. This is one the umps will avoid calling
unless it is blatant. Too controversial. Just do your best to keep
them to the right of the line. Same after they safely touch 1st. For
the other bases it is 3 feet on each side. We have all seen the
inexperienced kid veer towards the outfield grass desperately trying
to avoid the tag.
Balls and Strikes - Last year we all were in favor of the big strike
zone. The kids learn little or nothing from walks. We want them to
swing the bat. We want to avoid the conga line around the bases.
Games take forever also. Send them up there swinging. The zone we
tried to use last year Knees to Chest 3in (ball diameter on each
side of the plate) |
